Overview / 概要

Four messages from the first GAFRAB May 2023 cohort are published on the note.com Journal. They are not about architecture; they are about what it felt like to be on the island.

最初の GAFRAB 2023年5月 期の参加者による四つの言葉が、note.com のジャーナルに掲載されている。それらは建築についてではなく、島にいることがどのように感じられたかについての言葉である。

The four messages / 四つの言葉

  • Seymour Tseng (UC Berkeley, landscape architecture): the island becomes "home" by the act of being returned to. "Whenever you might be confused or want a break, you can always come back to where you started, you can always come back home."   • Karly Tangonan (University of Hawaii, architecture/landscape): conscious that "designs we create last for so many years before being forgotten"; reflects on warmth across the language barrier with the Sagiura children.   • Tomona Hashida (Musashino Art University, interior design): the studio gave her "the establishment of my own mind"; her motivation to study language shifted from career to wanting to understand her international peers.   • Kentaro Tawara (University of Tokyo, architecture): discovered the studio was about designing the system of education itself; learned from a child that "just walking on the beach together" is its own register of communication. The institutional theory behind it / その背後にある理論

The April 2025 "distant place" post (Nao Kono, nfa5944d79f02) articulates the bet: "Having a distant place is something like a technique for people learning something and living richly." The alumni messages are the evidence the bet is paying out.

2025年4月の「遠い場所」についての投稿（河野尚、nfa5944d79f02）は、その賭けをこう言い表している。「遠い場所を持つことは、何かを学び、豊かに生きる人々にとっての、いわば一つの技術のようなものである」。卒業生の言葉は、その賭けが実を結びつつあることの証である。
