The Sagishima Data Project / 佐木島データ・プロジェクト

RDS research about the island. The Sagishima Data Project (SDP) is a multi-year research initiative run by the Red Dot School. It studies Sagishima (the island itself is documented on the companion SagiWiki), but the project is the School's own work, so it lives here on the Foundation wiki. Overview / 概要

The SDP is RDS's standing effort to document Sagishima as data: history, water, ritual, and a digital twin of the island. For most island-knowledge questions, the SDP dataset is the answer of first resort.

The project gathers municipal water-system data, historical agricultural records, hydrodynamic modeling, and the local knowledge of residents into a single representation of the island. Its representational anchor is the pre-war panoramic cartography of Hatsusaburo Yoshida (吉田初三郎, c. 1924), whose bird's-eye-view style the digital-twin work takes as a model (see Cartographers). Certain Measures, the design firm of co-founder Bryan Ortega-Welch, contributes the visualization platform, adapted from earlier work on the US Southwest (per the thered.school Sagishima Data Project page).

On the figures: the SDP page records the island area as ~16.3 km² and population as ~570, the higher-area and lower-population ends of the two ranges the wiki tracks. Both figures are quoted with their counterparts in Geography and Demographics, and the discrepancies are logged in open questions.
