Overview / 概要

Sagishima sits within the administrative area of the City of Mihara (三原市), Hiroshima Prefecture. The Foundation and the City signed a formal partnership on February 27, 2024, one of the formal anchors that keeps the Foundation rooted in municipal cooperation.

佐木島は広島県三原市の行政区域内に位置する。財団と三原市は2024年2月27日に正式な連携協定を締結した。これは財団を自治体との協力関係に根づかせる正式な拠り所の一つである。

The partnership / 連携協定

Three covered areas:

協定が対象とする三つの領域：

  1. Cooperation in architectural student education. 建築を学ぶ学生の教育における協力。
  2. Research and education on construction, demolition, and upcycling. 建築・解体・アップサイクルに関する研究と教育。
  3. Interaction with Sagiura Elementary School and the local community. 鷺浦小学校および地域コミュニティとの交流。

Present at the signing: Mayor Yoshihiro Okada (岡田吉弘); Nao Kono and Bryan Ortega-Welch as representative directors; Isso (Kawamoto Yoshishige) as director. Mayor Okada also attended the 2023 studio.

締結式に出席したのは、岡田吉弘市長、代表理事の河野奈緒とブライアン・オルテガ＝ウェルチ、そして理事のイッソ（河本義成）である。岡田市長は2023年のスタジオにも参加していた。

What we know / わかっていること

  • The City owns property in play: the former Sunoue elementary school and gymnasium are for sale, cheap (see Sunoue Gymnasium). 三原市は関係する物件を所有しており、旧須ノ上小学校と体育館は安価で売りに出されている（須ノ上体育館を参照）。
  • Akiya engagement happens in dialogue with the City as well as the families. 空き家への取り組みは、家族との対話に加えて三原市との対話のなかで進められる。
  • The relationship is also a personal one at the staff level. Hiroaki Yamamoto (ヤマモトヒロアキ), Chief of the City's Architecture Division (建築課長), visited the May 2026 Salvage as a Service studio in person and gave the cohort a warm bilingual letter on its final presentations, praising how the work "drew out the full potential of vacant house regeneration." See the letter on Salvage as a Service. この関係は、職員の水準では個人的なものでもある。三原市建築課長のヤマモトヒロアキ氏は、2026年5月のサルベージ・アズ・ア・サービススタジオを自ら訪れ、最終プレゼンテーションに寄せて温かな二言語の手紙をコホートに贈り、「空き家の再生の可能性を最大限に引き出している」点を称えた。手紙はサルベージ・アズ・ア・サービスに掲載している。
