Open Questions / 未解決の問い

A live tracker of what the Foundation does not yet know about Sagishima. (The initial list was collected via the Compendium's section 16, but these are real Foundation gaps, not facts attributed to that synthesis.) When a question is answered, move the answer into the relevant wiki page, cite it to a primary source, and strike the question here.

This list is meant to grow. Honesty about gaps is a feature of the wiki, not a flaw.

Known discrepancies to reconcile

  • Population. 2023 figures cluster at ~580 to 600: note.com pyramid says 579; Japanese Wikipedia (official, as of 2023-03-31) says 596 (380 households, aging rate 71.08%). The older ~650 (Old Home post, Wall Party /square, Theory of Change "maximum ~650") is likely a rounded or earlier figure. Peak ~3,000 to ~3,600 in 1955. → People/Demographics.md
  • Fishing vs no-fishing. RDS's Old Home page lists premodern industries as "wooden boat-building, family farms, and fisheries," but Japanese Wikipedia states the island has no established fishing tradition and is agriculture-dominated. Reconcile (boat-building and some fishing may coexist with "no major fishery"). → History/Premodern_Sagishima.md, Land_and_Food/Historical_Agriculture.md
  • Akiya rate. ~30%+ of houses dormant (Theory of Change material list) vs "nearly half" vacant (Old Home post). → Built_Environment/Akiya.md
  • Isso's name kanji. The Mihara partnership post (n399a9c4dfb36) writes 河本吉重; the Kakumeisha post and the wiki use 河本義成. Both read Yoshishige. Confirm the correct written form. → People/Residents/Isso_Kawamoto_Yoshishige.md, _sources/note-journal/n399a9c4dfb36.md

Resolved / 解決済み

  • ~~Island area, 8.72 km² vs ~16.3 km².~~ Resolved 2026-06-02. Japanese Wikipedia (official figures) gives 面積 8.72 km², 周囲 18.2 km, matching the Old Home page. The "6.3 sq mi / 16.3 km²" was a unit error (the RDS site even prints the self-contradictory "6.3 square miles (8.72 km²)"). Use 8.72 km². → Place/Geography.md
  • ~~Journal post count, 23 vs 22.~~ Resolved 2026-06-02. The profile's "23" is the sum of magazine memberships; one post (ne6ea55acc76c) is cross-filed in both Journal and Collaboration, so there are 22 unique posts, all now archived verbatim in _sources/note-journal/.

Standing gaps (from Compendium §16)

  1. Isso's full inheritance. The institution's deepest living memory of the island is barely recorded. The Isso-San Anthropology initiative (⚡️ Critical) is the structural response. Much of the current wiki is provisional until this work is done. → People/Residents/Isso_Kawamoto_Yoshishige.md
  2. A complete history of premodern Sagishima. No specific account in Foundation records before the 1875 founding of the original Kakumeisha. Starting points: Mihara municipal archives, surrounding temple records, Isso himself. → History/Premodern_Sagishima.md
  3. The full list and condition of the 88+α Ohenro alcoves. The Data Project's 88 Plus Alpha sub-project is the standing effort; the catalog is incomplete. → Culture_and_Ritual/Ohenro_88_Plus_Alpha.md, /foundation/Research/88_Plus_Alpha/

  • ~~Photos of the kashiwa-mochi welcome (2026-06-02) withheld pending consent.~~ Resolved (2026-06-02): the wiki is internal, and the child pictured is an instructor's, so the welcome photos (grandmothers, mochi, tasting) are published on Culture_and_Ritual/Mutual_Aid.md. Revisit if the wiki ever becomes outward-facing again.

Japanese translation review (added 2026-06-02)

The article bodies were made fully bilingual on 2026-06-02 (Claude-generated Japanese, paragraph- and bullet-coequal). This has not had a native review. Items to confirm before any outward-facing use:

  • Whole-corpus naturalness. All 54 article bodies need a native pass for fluency and register. Treat the Japanese as draft.
  • Proper-noun reading inconsistency: "Sumikura". Rendered 隅倉 in Relationships/Sponsors_and_Craftspeople.md / Foundation research pages but 角倉 in Relationships/Neighbors_and_Region.md (Hiroshima University lab). Pick one written form. Given name "Hideaki" → 英明 is inferred. → confirm against primary.
  • Other inferred name kanji/readings. "Donotsuka / Tono" → 殿塚登 (reconstructed); "Sumikura+Ishigaki Lab" → 角倉・石垣研究室 (inferred); alumni names rendered by inference: Seymour Tseng → セイモア・ツェン, Carly Tangonan → カーリー・タンゴナン, "Hashida Yuna" → 橋田友奈, "Tahara Kentaro" → 田原健太郎, "Nao Kono" → 河野尚 (and left in Latin script in some files: standardize). → confirm all against the original note.com posts.
  • ~~Glossary "OK Ranch!" double Japanese.~~ Resolved 2026-06-02. Collapsed to the source sheet's own verbatim Japanese; the Claude-generated inline renderings were removed. Standing rule: when a source's original text is already in Japanese, use the original verbatim rather than generating a coequal Japanese rendering alongside it.
  • The U.H. welcome letter. Culture_and_Ritual/Mutual_Aid.md (and the quoted excerpt in Culture_and_Ritual/Radio_Taiso.md) reproduce an islander's original English letter; a Japanese rendering was added after the verbatim English per the bilingual rule. Confirm that re-rendering an islander's own English into Japanese is wanted, or leave the artifact English-only.
  • Minor English fixes noticed in passing (not changed). "Sunoe" should read "Sunoue" in Place/Maps_and_Imagery.md; a pre-existing en-dash "50s–60s" remains in People/Residents/Isso_Kawamoto_Yoshishige.md.

Sagishima Hymn / Sōroshū ingest (added 2026-06-04)

On 2026-06-04 two compiled local histories by Yamashita Hiromi (山下博巳) were ingested into the wiki: さぎしま讃歌 (Sagishima Sanka, "Hymn to Sagishima," a photo-history, bilingual) and 双鷺洲 (Sōroshū, a Japanese-only historical compendium). 1,705 facts were routed across 30 pages (24 enriched, 5 new: Place/Kosagishima.md, Culture_and_Ritual/Anrakuji.md, Land_and_Food/Salt_Fields.md, People/Youth_Associations.md, Built_Environment/Seinen_Kaikan.md). The verbatim text archive is in _sources/sagishima-sanka/ and _sources/soroshu/; the full per-page fact map, native-review queue, translation-error log, and conflict log are in Archive/hymn_ingest_2026-06-04/COVERAGE_MAP.md.

Native / historian review queue (high priority). A ready-to-use reviewer worksheet, Archive/hymn_ingest_2026-06-04/NATIVE_REVIEW_QUEUE.md, lists all 280 inline TENTATIVE readings grouped by page, each in full sentence context with its citation, a [L###] line-anchor, and a bilingual response slot (◯ 正しい ／ ✕ 修正 →); it carries the romanization house style and response instructions for the reviewer. (Regenerated 2026-06-04 after the photo / agriculture-split / Sources-consolidation edits, so line-anchors are current.) The grouped linguistic queue (by name-type) and the held date/identity conflicts remain in COVERAGE_MAP.md. The Japanese is the source's own (authoritative), but readings of Edo-and-earlier proper nouns are best-effort and OCR-affected: - Buddhist priest dharma-names (Anrakuji lineage 宥真→片山公雄, all TENTATIVE) and shrine officiant names need specialist verification. - Place readings flagged: 須波 vs 須ノ上 (do not auto-equate); 角南村 (Kosagishima's parent village); 和霊石地蔵, 大番社, 双鷺 (Sōro/Sōsagi), 重井 (Igei/Shigei), and many more. - Person readings flagged: 御畑興市 Mihata Kōichi (the sweet-potato champion), 下見吉十郎 Asami Kichijūrō, the four distinct Nishihara figures, donor rosters, etc. - Classical 候文 passages (reclamation disputes, shrine origin-legends, monument inscriptions) need a native pass before formal reuse. - Heavy-OCR sections (several 双鷺洲 sections) carry corrupt figures (e.g. impossible Jizō dimensions, "000" yields) that need reconstruction against clean 双鷺洲 / 三原市史 / 須波村 scans.

Conflicts HELD for reconciliation (not resolved on ingest). Flagged inline on the pages and listed in COVERAGE_MAP.md. Notably: - Mihara administrative history: existing pages' 1956 Mihara merger vs a newly documented 1677 Edo-era Asano/Hiroshima split (History/Premodern_Sagishima.md). - Family record framing: existing Hamamoto/Sumifuku-maru entry vs the Nishihara/Yoshimura/Ōmori/Koreyasu lineages foregrounded by the books (People/Families.md). - Port name: 鷺港 (existing) vs 佐木港 (sources); Shirasagi-maru school-ferry year; Kitagawa-maru disaster year. - Building donors and dates at Hachiman Shrine and the community centers (all donor readings TENTATIVE); the 村営住宅 (1953, village-run teacher housing) vs the page's 市営住宅 that the Workshop deconstructed (Built_Environment/Akiya.md). - The Kakumeisha routing was rejected by the ingest: its 6 routed facts were civic buildings, not the 格明舎 schoolhouse; that block is held in Archive/hymn_ingest_2026-06-04/drafts/Built_Environment__Kakumeisha.md for relocation, NOT merged.

Structural follow-ups (resolved 2026-06-04). - ~~Built_Environment/Civic_Buildings.md~~ Created. Gathers the village hall, community centers/halls, teacher housing, the Anrakuji sanmon (relocated 1877 from Mihara Castle), the Kameyama Theater, and the postwar corporate facilities (Sharp recreation center, Mitsubishi/Setouchi Silver centers). The previously-held Kakumeisha civic block was relocated here; the civic section was moved off Akiya.md. - ~~A temples-and-shrines page~~ Created as Culture_and_Ritual/Temples_and_Shrines.md. Consolidates the Hachiman Shrine origin and building chronology, the shrine roster (Sagimori, Hiro, Kōjin, Sukune, Ōtani), the ancestral-spirit enshrinement, and the Warei-ishi Jizō; the institutional blocks were moved off Obon_and_Annual_Ceremonies.md (which keeps the festival calendar and rites) and Geography.md. The Kōjinja-vs-Kōjin-shrine and the two soreisha dates remain in-page "to confirm" flags. - ~~Romanization: Saginoura vs Sagiura, Saki vs Sagi.~~ Resolved (Xavaar, 2026-06-04): house style is 鷺浦 = Sagiura and 佐木 (district/port) = Sagi; the island stays Sagishima. Both are the correct readings (the book's "Saginoura"/"Saki" were misreadings). Normalized across all content pages 2026-06-04; the verbatim _sources/ archive keeps the book's own spellings.

Translation note. 376 machine-translation errors in the book's own English were corrected on ingest (including meaning-reversing ones: 誇り "pride" mistranslated as "dust," a dropped negative, a fabricated "first rice paddies" claim, a hallucinated "2011" date). The corrections are logged in COVERAGE_MAP.md; the book's English is reliable for prose but was not trusted for any proper noun.

Photos (Phase 4) — first drop done 2026-06-04; rights CLEARED for public/Compendium use (Xavaar). 8 photos cropped from the さぎしま讃歌 scans (Archive/sources_raw/...zip), captioned EN/JA with さぎしま讃歌 p.X citations, and embedded: mikan orchards (p.94) + pyrethrum (p.32) + barley-threshing senba (p.37) + paddy-conversion monument (p.106) on Land_and_Food/Historical_Agriculture.md (these moved there 2026-06-04 when the historical content was split off Agriculture_Today.md); Ōgihama salt field (p.119) on Land_and_Food/Salt_Fields.md; rice paddies 1942 (p.108) on Place/Hydrology_and_the_Water_Question.md; the c.1970 land-use map (p.107) on Place/Maps_and_Imagery.md (fills that stub, now draft); farming-season daycare (p.57) on Culture_and_Ritual/Mutual_Aid.md. Captions use established/house-style readings (Nishihara, Mukōda, Sagi). Batch 2 (2026-06-04): 7 more embedded, filling photo-less pages — 小浦八幡宮 torii (p.140) + 比呂神社の杜 (p.141) on Culture_and_Ritual/Temples_and_Shrines.md; 恵美須神社 great pines (p.136) on Place/Natural_Environment.md; 向田小学校 80th-anniversary field day (p.144) on History/School_Lineage_1875.md; 二宮金次郎 statue unveiling 1931 (p.145) on Built_Environment/Civic_Buildings.md; seaweed-gathering / mo-nuki (p.46) + sweet-potato sorting (p.30) on Land_and_Food/Historical_Agriculture.md. Batch 3 (2026-06-04): 5 more — 佐木農協と桟橋 1959 (p.148) on Place/Ports_and_Landing.md; 須ノ上の港 1930s (p.152) on Place/Districts/Sunoue.md; 小佐木島遠望 (p.173) on Place/Kosagishima.md; black draft ox (p.62) on Land_and_Food/Historical_Agriculture.md (Livestock); 1950 Central Community Hall (p.61) on Built_Environment/Civic_Buildings.md. 20 photos total across 16 pages (the curated target). No gymnasium photo exists in the book (Sunoue_Gymnasium stays photoless); the p.40 waterfront building couldn't be cleanly identified and was skipped. Diminishing returns past here; remaining book images are mostly modern "現在(平成)" snapshots.

Square Vegetable Farming Guide ingest (added 2026-06-06)

Facts from the Red Dot School Square group's bilingual Sagishima Vegetable Farming Guide (2026) were folded into Land_and_Food/Agriculture_Today.md ("The island's cultivated range, 2026"). Open items:

  • "Blue orange" (青いオレンジ) varietal name unconfirmed. The guide names a local citrus picked green and "sweeter than it looks," grown alongside mikan. The standard cultivar name is not established; candidates to check with island farmers / 373.farm include green-harvested mikan (青切りみかん) or a specific Setouchi cultivar. Confirm before treating "blue orange" as a formal variety name.
  • JA in the new section is Claude-drafted and needs a native pass before outward-facing use (rule 12), especially the climate block and the crop list.

  • Map legends/keys unconfirmed (maps now embedded 2026-06-06). Square's Sunoue land-use map is embedded on Place/Districts/Sunoue.md and the mutual-aid map on Culture_and_Ritual/Mutual_Aid.md (both _assets/townships/sunoue_*_2026.png). Two keys are still missing: (a) the land-use map's color legend (which parcel color means which use) is not documented, so the caption stays general; (b) the mutual-aid map's numbered points 1–17 are not individually keyed — Interviews 2.docx gives the resident interviews the map draws on (Yamane/Hiraki, Fukuda/Koroku, Nakamura, the teacher; already on People/Resident_Voices.md) but no point-to-household table. Get both keys from the Square group to caption precisely.

  • Native-review worksheet for this material (added 2026-06-07). All Claude-drafted Japanese from the 2026-06-06→07 session — the Agriculture Today 2026 vegetable-guide section, the two map captions above, plus the Critical Initiatives intro/conclusion and the French Group Snapshot form — is collected into one reviewer-ready sheet at ../../Studio_X_Proposal/Native_Review_Queue_2026-06-07.md (bilingual ◯正しい／✕要修正 slots, house-style reminders). It is the gate before any of this goes outward-facing; the three factual confirmations above ride along in its §F.
