Overview / 概要

Kakumeisha (格明舎) is the Foundation's schoolhouse in Sunoue. Its story is recorded in Nao Kono's January 2024 note.com post "私たちの校舎「格明舎」/ Our school building Kaku-Mei-Sha," kept here because the post will not be on note.com forever.

格明舎（格明舎）は、須ノ上にある財団の校舎である。その経緯は Nao Kono による2024年1月の note.com の投稿「私たちの校舎「格明舎」/ Our school building Kaku-Mei-Sha」に記録されており、この投稿が note.com に永遠に残るわけではないため、ここに留め置いている。

What we know / わかっていること

  • The current building was constructed in 1949 as a public clinic (診療所), serving the island's medical needs for decades. After the clinic relocated it served for years as the 須の上第二集会所 (Sunoue Second Community Center) before its use as a meeting hall ended. 現在の建物は1949年に公立の診療所として建てられ、数十年にわたり島の医療を担った。診療所が移転したのち、集会所としての役割を終えるまで、長年須の上第二集会所として使われた。
  • A one-storey wooden Japanese building: entering, you meet a large tatami hall (the RDS About page describes an 18-tatami meeting hall), with a kitchen, storage room, and conference room behind. The current address on record is 〒723-0022 広島県三原市鷺浦町4351-1. 木造平屋建ての和風の建物で、入ると大きな畳の広間に迎えられ（レッドドットスクールの About ページは18畳の集会室と記している）、その奥に台所、物置、会議室がある。記録上の現住所は〒723-0022 広島県三原市鷺浦町4351-1。
  • It became vacant in 2022; demolition had been under discussion at the district level before the donation. 2022年に空き家となり、寄贈より前には地区のレベルで取り壊しが検討されていた。
  • Isso (Kawamoto Yoshishige, 河本義成) proposed donating the building to the school. That donation is the structural reason the Foundation has a schoolhouse at all. イッソ（河本義成）が、この建物を学校に寄贈することを提案した。財団がそもそも校舎を持っているのは、この寄贈という根本的な経緯による。
  • The Red Dot School began using it in May 2023, in time for the first GAFRAB studio. レッドドットスクールは2023年5月、最初の GAFRAB スタジオに間に合うかたちで使用を開始した。
  • In 2024 it was formally named Kakumeisha (格明舎); before that it had been informally called Terakoya (寺子屋). 2024年に正式に格明舎と名づけられた。それ以前は非公式に寺子屋と呼ばれていた。
  • The name descends from the original Kaku-Mei-Sha school (founded 1875, closed 1995); the lineage is named, not the building (see School Lineage). この名はもとの格明舎という学校（1875年創立、1995年閉校）に由来する。名づけられているのは建物ではなくその系譜である（学校の系譜を参照）。
  • Character by character: 格 (essence) + 明 (to clarify) + 舎 (a building/shelter), glossed as "exploring the essence of things." 一字ずつ読むと、格（本質）＋明（明らかにする）＋舎（建物・住まい）であり、「物事の本質を探究する」と解される。
  • It is the oldest standing public structure on Sagishima in the sense that the 1949 building predates everything else still standing that was built for public use. 1949年のこの建物は、公共の用途のために建てられて今も残るほかのどの建物よりも古いという意味で、佐木島に現存する最も古い公共建造物である。

To work in Kakumeisha is to work in a doubly inherited place: the walls built for one public purpose, the name carried over from another, the current use a third. None of the layers are erased. The Workshop's ethic, that what previous generations built deserves care, is the ethic Kakumeisha itself embodies.

格明舎で働くということは、二重に受け継がれた場所で働くということである。壁はある公共の目的のために建てられ、名はまた別のものから受け継がれ、現在の用途はさらにもう一つのものである。どの層も消し去られてはいない。前の世代が築いたものは大切に扱うに値するというワークショップの倫理を、格明舎そのものが体現している。
