はじめに
「耕して天に至る」と云う言葉は、瀬戸内の島々の風景を表した言葉ですが、「さぎしま」の姿を端的に表した言葉であると云えます。
この様な環境の中で先人は常に英知をはたらかせ生活を切り開いてきました。私は父が蒐集した写真や資料を見る度に、先人が生活の向上を目指し、また地域つくりに、日々努力され、頑張ってこられた姿に、時の流れとともに、想像し難い発展をしてきた「さぎしま」の現在があることに、先人の素晴しさを痛感してきました。
予々この様な先人の姿や地域の姿を何らかの形で記録に留め伝承できたらと思ってきました。
この度、西原美智様よりご夫君、故西原通夫氏の撮された貴重な写真の提供を頂き、その思いが一層新たになりました。
写真は、「さぎしま」の戦前・戦後の生活を物語る自然の風景や先人が額に汗して働いて来られた姿などが多方面に亘り収められており、英知をもって日々たゆまぬ努力により生活を確立し、地域つくりを標榜してこられた姿が窺えます。
地域の変わり行く姿が撮された素晴しい写真であると云えます。
現在、「さぎしま」は、過疎化が進み、活性化への取り組みは大きな課題となっています。
先人が英知をはたらかせ歩んだ姿に注視し、その生き方から学び、私たちの生活の拠り所にすることは大事なことではないでしょうか。
先人の足跡を共有し、「さぎしま」の活性化を標榜して、「ほこり」をもって、世に伝えていける生活を創造したいものです。
本誌は、主題を「さぎしま讃歌」とし、サブタイトルを「今はみられないさぎしまの風景」として、西原氏の貴重な写真の中から18葉と、多くの方々が蒐集された写真、996 葉に、若干の説明をつけ構成いたしました。
先人の足跡が共有できる一助になることを願っています。

わずかな荒地も畑にかえていく

急な斜面を一歩一歩ふみしめて

Introduction
The phrase "cultivate to the sky" describes the scenery of the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, but it is also a simple description of Sagishima.
In this environment, our ancestors have always exercised their wisdom and pioneered a way of life. Whenever I look at the photos and documents collected by my father, I am struck by how our predecessors worked hard day after day to improve the quality of life and to build the community, and how Sagishima has developed over time in ways that are hard to imagine.
I have always wished to record and hand down such a picture of our predecessors and the local community in some form or another.
This desire has been renewed by the valuable photos taken by Mrs. Yoshitomo Nishihara and her husband, the late Michio Nishihara.
The photographs show the natural scenery of prewar and postwar life in Sagishima, and the sweat of our forefathers' foreheads as they worked hard in various fields, and show how they established their lives and advocated community building through tireless daily efforts with wisdom and wisdom.
These are wonderful photographs of a changing community.
Today, Sagishima is depopulated and efforts to revitalize the community are a major challenge.
It is important for us to pay attention to our predecessors' wisdom, learn from their way of life, and use it as a basis for our own lives.
We should share the footsteps of our predecessors, advocate the revitalization of "Sagishima," and create a life with "dust" that we can pass on to the world.
This magazine is composed of 18 of Mr. Nishihara's precious photos and 996 photos collected by many people, with some explanations, under the theme of "Sagishima Hymn" and subtitle of "Sagishima Scenery Not Seen Nowadays".
We hope that this will help you to share the footsteps of our predecessors.

Sagishima Hymn - Cultivate to Heaven
On the top of a quiet island in the Seto Inland Sea
I raise my hoe high and high
I plow through the soil
Relying only on simple labor
The cultivation of the land by the whole community continues
with each hoe
the hard earth moves slowly
and
people's lives live in it
People work
from early in the morning till late at night
even the smallest wasteland is transformed into a field
Seeds are sown in the dug up soil
step by step on the steep slopes
Heavy compost is carried away

And soon a rich pyrethrum blooms
Silvery white flowers sway in the mountain fields under a clear May sky
The joy of harvest
