Overview / 概要

The Foundation's principal student dormitory. A two-storey wooden building built in 1961 and expanded in 1972, with distinctive blue roof tiles, four tatami bedrooms, a kitchen, a dining room, shower, and toilet. The grounds include a garden and storage; the house is three minutes' walk from the ocean.

財団の中心的な学生宿舎。1961年に建てられ、1972年に増築された木造二階建てで、特徴的な青い瓦屋根を持ち、四つの畳の寝室、台所、食堂、シャワー、トイレを備える。敷地には庭と物置があり、家は海から徒歩3分の場所にある。

What we know / わかっていること

  • Donated to the Foundation in early 2024 by Toshimitsu Hamamoto (浜本敏光), after standing vacant since ~2020. 2020年頃から空き家だったが、2024年初頭に浜本敏光氏から財団へ寄贈された。
  • The name carries the family's story. The Hamamoto family operated a cargo vessel, the Sumifuku-maru (住福丸), which carried Chikuho coal from Wakamatsu Port to the Kansai region. The house took its name from the boat, and the boat from the wish in its characters: 住 (to live) + 福 (good fortune) + の家 (the house of), "the house of the good fortune of living." The Sumifuku-maru carried coal up the inland sea; Sumifuku House carries students now. 名前には浜本家の物語が宿っている。浜本家は貨物船住福丸（住福丸）を運航し、若松港から関西地方へ筑豊の石炭を運んでいた。家の名はこの船に由来し、船の名はその文字に込められた願いに由来する。住（住まう）＋福（幸い）＋の家、すなわち「住まう幸いの家」である。住福丸は瀬戸内海を石炭を運んで上った。いま、住福の家は学生たちを運んでいる。
  • It is the more frequently used of the two student houses; working cohort capacity references ~14. 二つの学生宿舎のうちより頻繁に使われる方であり、実働コホートの収容人数の目安は約14名とされる。
