Youth associations / 青年会・青年団

The youth associations of Sagiura Village (鷺浦村), which covered Sagishima, were a standing organ of self-help and self-cultivation (修養, shūyō). Beyond their organizational history, the records preserve the associations' actual program of work: regular meetings for moral and intellectual cultivation, and several disciplined savings schemes built on members' own labor (双鷺洲 p.234-235, §37).

佐木島を含む鷺浦村の青年会・青年団は、自助と修養を担う常設の組織であった。その沿革にとどまらず、記録には会の実際の事業、すなわち徳育・知育のための定例会と、会員自身の労働に基づくいくつかの規律ある貯蓄の仕組みが残されている（双鷺洲 p.234-235、第37節）。

Moral and intellectual cultivation / 徳育・知育

The associations met regularly for moral and intellectual cultivation (智徳修養, chitoku shūyō). On April 8 a lecture on moral and intellectual cultivation was given as part of the recorded activities (双鷺洲 p.234).

会は智徳修養のために定期的に集まった。記録された事業の一つとして、4月8日に智徳修養の講話が行われた（双鷺洲 p.234）。

Once a month, on the night of the full moon, all members gathered for a discussion meeting (満月会 / 談話会, mangetsu-kai / danwa-kai) to promote their moral and intellectual advancement (双鷺洲 p.234).

毎月一度、満月の夜に、会員全員が徳育・知育の向上のために満月会（談話会）として集まり、語り合った（双鷺洲 p.234）。

A circulating library (巡回文庫, junkai bunko) was established to lend out various magazines and books to members (双鷺洲 p.235).

会員に各種の雑誌や書籍を貸し出すため、巡回文庫が設けられた（双鷺洲 p.235）。

Savings built on members' labor / 会員の労働による貯蓄

The associations turned members' own handiwork into a shared fund. Each member made three pairs of straw sandals (草履, zōri) per month; the sandals were sold jointly and the proceeds banked as savings (双鷺洲 p.234).

会は会員自身の手仕事を共同の基金に変えた。各会員は月に三足の草履を作り、それらを共同で売り、その代金を貯蓄として積み立てた（双鷺洲 p.234）。

From April of Meiji 44 (1911) this was formalized as the zōri-savings scheme (草履貯金, zōri chokin): members each made three pairs of straw sandals monthly, sold them jointly, and saved the proceeds, with the savings returned to a member upon withdrawal from the association (双鷺洲 p.235).

明治44年（1911）4月より、これは草履貯金として制度化された。各会員は毎月三足の草履を作り、共同で売って代金を貯蓄し、退会時にその貯蓄を本人へ返した（双鷺洲 p.235）。

To cultivate diligence and perseverance, members braided wheat-straw braid (麦桿真田, mugiwara sanada) for one hour every Friday night. The income from the braid was saved toward the costs of inspection tours (視察), exercise equipment, and the purchase of books and magazines (双鷺洲 p.234).

勤勉と忍耐を養うため、会員は毎週金曜の夜に一時間、麦桿真田を編んだ。真田から得た収入は、視察の費用、運動器具、書籍・雑誌の購入のために積み立てられた（双鷺洲 p.234）。

Recorded savings figures / 記録された貯蓄額

Several savings totals are recorded. The figures below are recorded as printed and want verification against the original (双鷺洲 p.234-235).

いくつかの貯蓄合計額が記録されている。以下の数字は印字のまま記録されたものであり、原本との照合を要する（双鷺洲 p.234-235）。

  • A savings of 19 yen 50 sen is recorded (噂金式 / zōkin-shiki, term as transcribed) (双鷺洲 p.234). 19円50銭の貯蓄が記録される（zōkin-shiki、原文の語のまま）（双鷺洲 p.234）。
  • From April of Meiji 42 (1909) a regulated savings of 5 sen per person per month was made; the cumulative total is given as 63 yen 55 sen (双鷺洲 p.235). 明治42年（1909）4月より、一人月5銭の規定貯蓄が行われ、累計は63円55銭とされる（双鷺洲 p.235）。
  • Basic assets (基本財産, kihon zaisan) were accumulated through members' joining and withdrawal fees, and from April of Meiji 44 (1911) by 1 sen per person per month; the total is given as 15 yen 70 sen (双鷺洲 p.235). 基本財産は会員の入会金・退会金によって積み立てられ、明治44年（1911）4月より一人月1銭でも積まれた。合計は15円70銭とされる（双鷺洲 p.235）。

The term transcribed as 噂金式 (zōkin-shiki) for the 19 yen 50 sen savings is uncertain; it may be an OCR error (compare the legitimate savings terms 貯金 / 積金). Reading and figure want native-speaker and historian review. The Mutual_Aid §37 section separately flags other Meiji-44 monetary totals from these same pages as OCR-garbled; treat all of these figures with the same caution.

19円50銭の貯蓄について噂金式（zōkin-shiki）と転記した語は不確かであり、OCRの誤りの可能性がある（正当な語の貯金・積金と比較されたい）。読みと数字は母語話者・歴史家の確認を要する。相互扶助の第37節でも、同じページの明治44年度の他の金額がOCRの乱れとして別途明示されている。これらの数字はすべて同様に慎重に扱うこと。
