Overview / 概要

Kaneto Shindo (新藤兼人), The Naked Island (裸の島), 1960. The director's masterwork opens with aerial footage of Sagishima's then-intensive cultivation. The film is silent and contemplative, closer to documentary than narrative.

新藤兼人監督『裸の島』（1960年）。監督の代表作であるこの作品は、当時の佐木島の集約的な耕作を捉えた空撮映像で幕を開ける。台詞のない静かで思索的な映画であり、物語というよりは記録映画に近い。

Why it matters here / なぜここで重要か

  • It is primary visual evidence of the island's pre-contraction landscape: terraced fields across most of the visible slope (see Premodern Sagishima and Historical Agriculture). これは、縮小以前の島の景観を示す一次的な視覚資料である。見渡せる斜面のほとんどに段々畑が広がっている（近代以前の佐木島およびかつての農業を参照）。
  • Watching it on Sagishima itself, after walking the actual hillsides, is one of the most direct ways to feel the contraction the island has gone through. 実際の山の斜面を歩いたうえで、佐木島そのものでこの映画を観ることは、島がたどってきた縮小を肌で感じる最も直接的な方法の一つである。
